SHEA BUTTER | Ingredient Index

Growing for over 300 years, the Karite or Shea tree has been revered in African communities over millennia for its bountiful properties. Two sub-species exist - West African ‘Vitellaria Paradoxa’ and East African ‘Vitellaria Nilotica’ with qualities unique to each region’s climate and environment - used for food, medicine (treating skin conditions, promoting wound healing), soap making and enabling trade. Shea butter is especially famed for its moisturizing, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, sensitive enough to soothe breakouts and protecting babies’ skin against nappy rashes.

It is called Mo Yar in Acholi Luo, Okwuma in Igbo, kadanya in Hausa, Kochi in Nupe, Yokuti in Ewe, and Ori in Yoruba.
